Skincare Saviours

When my skin is not feeling up to scratch, there are a few products I reach for to bring my skin back to normality.

If I've been exposed to dry air (a long week at the stuffy, heated office or extra time commuting on the tube), I reach for an extra dose of rosehip oil. Rosehip oil is full of vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids so is great for hydrating dry skin and healing and fading dark spots and scars. Slick a few drops of this on each night before bed and over time your skin will become softer and more even. It's also great for sensitive and spot prone skin and can actually help if you've got irritations or blemishes (so don't be afraid of whacking some on over a breakout... it's not that type of oil!).

When I find myself with a nasty spot, especially one of those deep-seeded cystic ones, the Origins Spot Remover is hands down the best spot treatment for it. Without drying out the skin around it, this formula takes down the swelling and redness overnight. It's perfect if you're prone to monthly hormonal breakouts, if you suffer from cystic acne, or if you just have one pesky little pimple that you'd like to nip in the bud quick-fast.

Weleda Skin Food has made the rounds in the beauty blogosphere, but for good reason. Although I wouldn't use it in the day (it's pretty rich and leaves a greasy residue on the hands), it's fantastic for keeping beside my bed for an overnight hand lotion. If my hands have taken a beating, I slather this stuff on and in the morning my hands are baby soft again. If you can get past the greasy film it leaves until it soaks in, this one is well worth picking up (especially if you've got hangnails).

When I've had a breakout or my skin is feeling sensitive and easily reddens I like to use La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo+ to calm it down and help fight any breakouts. You can use this is a spot treatment, but I like to use it as a light all-over moisturiser. It's very thin in consistency and sinks into the skin effortlessly within seconds so doesn't feel like you're clogging up your pores with product. The new formula (with the added '+') helps get rid of redness and acne scarring, evening your skin tone. It costs a little more than the original, but for the added benefits I think it's well worth it.
